Our Purpose

We exist to eliminate worldwide the harmful effects of explosives on People, Property and the Planet (Environment) by encouraging our Members to learn from each other’s experiences.

Harmful effects

SAFEX believes the responsible and professional use of explosives is a power for good. Its ability to unlock mineral wealth and facilitate the development of infrastructure is generally appreciated. However, SAFEX also recognises the harm an unplanned explosives event can do to people, property and the environment. Besides these direct impacts from an unplanned event, such an event can have a ripple effect on, for example:

  • Customers if there is an interruption in the supply of explosives.
  • Time required to recover from a mishap that could have been used more productively.
  • Money spent on restoring normal production that could have been employed in a more worthwhile way.

Industry reputation

Ultimately, these impacts result in tarnishing the Reputation of our industry. An unplanned incident in one part of the world affects the image people everywhere have of our industry. A negative image of the explosives industry undermines its sustainability globally. For example, as result of public pressure authorities may be obliged to resort to increased regulations which can further complicate explosives operations.

Therefore, SAFEX Members have joined hands in helping each other eliminate the harmful effects of explosives. Not only will it address those negative impacts, but it also makes good business sense.
