Ammonium Nitrate and Fertilizer Safety
Author & Publisher: K D Shah, MBE.
The author, Kishore (Kish) Shah, is well known in the ammonium nitrate (AN) and fertilizer industries. His career has spanned over fifty years, including more than thirty years’ employment at world leading producers of ammonium nitrate-based products and approaching two decades of consultancy work. He has acted as a leading technical consultant to industry associations in the European Union and UK.
He has published many papers and made presentations at ANNA meetings. He has been involved in the work of the United Nations’ relevant committees of experts on the transport of dangerous goods for many years, making a significant contribution to the development of UN transport regulations. He has come to be regarded as a leading international expert on AN safety.
In this book, the author has attempted to consolidate advanced expertise and practically relevant literature published over the last century. He has supplemented that with his own observations, experience and analysis, to provide an accessible resource of reliable and practical information on hazardous behaviour of AN-based products and corresponding safety implications.
“The author is an internationally leading authority on ammonium nitrate safety issues and has provided in this book a complete review of ammonium nitrate technology ranging from its physico-chemical properties and determination of these, manufacturing, storage, transport and application issues and an accident history. The book concludes with sections on consequence analysis and emergency planning. “This text will be of considerable interest to the fertilizer and civil explosive community, to institutions
involved in the safety of hazardous chemicals as well as to legislators and planning authorities. It will also be an invaluable contribution to science and engineering technical libraries.”
Martin Braithwaite, Visiting Scholar, University of Cambridge.
“Kish Shah has acquired wide knowledge and deep understanding of the safety, health, environmental and regulatory aspects of our industry, with a focus on ammonium nitrate-based products. He had a long and illustrious career in the fertilizer industry and commands high respect as an expert in fertilizer safety internationally. “Fertilizers Europe welcomes the publication of this book and believes that it will serve as a very good reference and practical book for young engineers as well as seasoned practitioners in the field.”
Fertilizers Europe, Industry association in the EU.
“The book is an outstanding introduction to the field of ammonium nitrate fertilizers and outlines in detail the salient safety features surrounding ammonium nitrate. “I strongly recommend this book to all engineers and others working in the ammonium nitrate-based industries.”
